The season for wedding flowers is underway.

May 9, 2017

I can't believe we're already in May.  The daffodils have long since flowered, the Primroses and Hellebores too and now with the longer days and a slight rise in the temperature we already have Geums, Scilla (Bluebells,) Hesperis and lots of things bursting into life.

I love Spring flowers, mainly because they tend to have a glorious scent.  A simple bunch of Narcissi plonked on the kitchen table will soon waft their scent around.  Couples who are getting married in March, April and early May often wonder if they're dream bouquet/s can be created even though there aren't as many flowers growing.  The simple answer is Yes!

In early spring there are Tulips and Narcissi, and gorgeous blousy Ranunculus (from Cornish growers) that almost look like Roses.  Anemones in rich jewel like colours to softer pastel shades are available too.  Depending on the weather, in late April we start with Scilla (bluebells,) Geums and Hesperis making an appearance.

The jam jar posies above were for a late March wedding at Brynich Barn.  The photo was taken in the polytunnel just before I loaded the car up - so it's a bit dodgy but you get an idea as to how colourful Spring flowers can be.

Pale pinks, lilac and creamy white.  This bouquet had tulips, lilac, anemones, ranunculus.

Early may bridal bouquet of tulips, anemones, aquilegia, Hesperis, centaura, snapdragons, scented stocks, wallflowers and Solomon's seal.

The bridesmaids.  All slightly different but full of scented late spring flowers in a mix of colours.

So you see, british grown flowers in spring can be as natural and rustic, or as jolly and colourful as flowers at other times of the year.

Now I just need to keep my fingers crossed for some rain, followed by more sunshine and with any luck there will be plenty of flowers for all the lovely Summer weddings to come.
